CAIRO/GAZA/Jerusalem, July 13 (Reuters) - At least 90 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air strikes in a designated humanitarian zone in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli health ministry said. Israel said the strikes targeted Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was

unclear whether Deif had been killed, but told a news conference: “Either way, we will reach out to the entire Hamas leadership.”

The militant Islamist group Hamas said claims that Israel had targeted its leaders were false and were intended to justify the attack, which was the deadliest Israeli attack in Gaza in weeks. Displaced

people who had been sheltering in the area described bodies and body parts strewn on the ground, saying their tents had been blown away by the shelling.

"I didn't even know where I was or what was happening," said Sheikh Youssef, a Gaza City resident who is now a refugee in the al-Mawasi area.

"I came out of my tent and looked around and saw that it had collapsed, there were body parts and corpses everywhere, old women were thrown to the ground, young children were smashed to pieces," he told Reuters.

The Israeli military said the strike on Deif also targeted Rafa Salama, a commander of Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigades, whom it described as two of the masterminds of the October 7 attack on southern Israel that sparked the nine-month war in Gaza. Israeli military

officials previously told reporters they were still confirming the results of the airstrike.

Deif survived seven Israeli assassination attempts in 2021, the most recent of which was a suicide bombing that killed dozens of Israelis, and has topped Israel’s wanted list for decades. The

Gaza Strip’s health ministry said the strikes killed at least 91 Palestinians and wounded 300, the highest death toll in weeks in the conflict-torn region.
